Buckhurst Park marquee

Reportage wedding photography at Buckhurst Park

Alex and James had come back from their home in Hong Kong (along with many friends from there and around the world) for their wedding In East Sussex. A traditional church wedding, an Aston martin, red bus, marquee on the lawn of a stately home – a dash by some ushers to get more booze… An English summer wedding, under cloudy skies and a breeze. The sun did appear but not for long. It is England…

Coverage kicks off in Tunbridge Wells – at the home of Alex’s mother. When I arrived, the bride and bridesmaids were posing in the garden for the videographer (from France!)   Alex even popped on her dress early – they were all ready very early. No usual lastminute mad panic, that I saw, before I left for St Michael’s church.

St Michael and All Angels church

A quintessental old church in the countryside, next to the Buckhurst estate. (Interesting fact : a lightning strike, on the church, in 1663, ‘melting the bells, and causing a great deal of damage; few parts of the building survived’)  – so not as old as it looks but must have been quite a storm? Still, a scenic spot, sitting on a small hill, above the road.

The guests gathered, in the sunshine – many disembarking from the Routemaster bus. James arrived a little later. Then it was the turn of Alex’s mother and the bridesmaids, before Alex’s father drove her up the church in a classic Aston Martin DB5. The Bond car. The one from Goldfinger, the one that got a bit ‘shot-up’ in Skyfall. (Wait until you see James’s face, when he gets to drive it later..!). It was breezey and the veil needed taming. Alex’s chewing gum was ‘disposed of’ in a unique way, by one of the bridesmaids… Then it was time to enter the church. Time for Alex and James to get married.

A confetti run outside, it was then an unorthodox arrangement, as James had to squeeze his tall frame into the backseat of the DB5, for the short drive, around the corner, to Buckhurst Park.

Buckhurst Park wedding reception

Drinks on the upper lawn, a marquee on the lower lawn. Wedding receptions at Buckhurst are in the grounds, the house and buildings are off limits. A view of Winnie the Pooh’s 100 Acre wood – part of the Buckhurst estate. By the now the sun was increasingly disappearing behind gathering clouds – some of them dark. The breeze got chillier. Jackets were handed out by the gallant. Eventually, everyone headed for the marquee, to continue the drinks, out of the wind. Some competitive wedding games carried on though, on the lawn next to the marquee.

Just before the meal – the speeches interspersed between the courses, ushers were dispatched, to get more booze! Thirsty lot.

During her father’s speech, Alex was invited to stand up. When she sat back down, the chair wasn’t where she thought it was (I think James got the blame?)…

No evening sunshine, the clouds just got denser but no-one cared, as the band kicked off the party…

Here are just a few images from this wedding at Buckhurst Park…

Such beautiful photos, I see something different every time I look at them. The colour and black & white photos offer much more to the viewer in terms of depth, emotion and informality. They’re all stunning.

You couldn’t have captured our day more accurately, the selection of photos you have here are stunning and make me so excited to see the rest! Your style of photography suited our day perfectly and I’m in love with what you captured. Thank you a hundred times over. All the best, Alex
