Botleys

Botleys wedding photography

The day before St Patrick’s day, the day of this wedding, Spring had arrived it seemed. The temperature was milder to recent weeks but then the forecast, for St Patrick’s day, said the ‘mini beast from the east’ was going to shatter this. Just in time for Sophie and Chris’s wedding day. (The actual wedding day had been in more Spring like conditions, a couple of days before, but this was the blessing and party, at Botleys wedding venue). Sure enough, a dusting of snow overnight and a bitterly cold day. This was going to be an indoor wedding. Snow was in the air all day but the amber warning, of heavy snow, seemed unnecessary? Or was it still coming?

Botleys is an eighteenth century Palladian country mansion. It’s had many uses since it was built – a hospital, a nurses’ home, offices… and was hit by a fire in the 1990s. It reminds me of Clandon Park, another Surrey wedding venue, that was gutted by fire, a few years ago. Botleys is now a wedding venue, set in parkland, surrounded by a business park. We wouldn’t be using the grounds on this St Patrick’s day – too much like winter for that.

Rehearsing the walk

Coverage kicks off when Sophie and Chris arrive (separately) at Botleys. A chance for Sophie, and her sisters, to practice the walk down the steep steps that lead into the Atrium and the ceremony. A lot of steep steps for any nervous bride to negotiate in full view of everyone! Meanwhile Chris got to grips with his jacket and his hair gel. A ceremony – a blessing – conducted by Sophie’s uncle. Confetti down the aisle, as too cold to usher everyone outside.  Then drinks back up in the main hall. The Atrium was turned around for the wedding breakfast.

Speeches followed the food – the cake was cut and the party kicked off, with the briefest of first dances. The band, featuring Sophie’s brother, Luke, on guitar – got the crowd going. Some party props helped too! Some sore heads in the morning? But what about the snow? Well, judging by the blizzard I drove through on the way home, it looked like it was finally coming?
