Anteros wedding

Reportage wedding photography at the Anteros Arts Foundation

Anteros – In Greek mythology, Anteros was the god of requited love, literally “love returned” or “counter-love” and also the punisher of those who scorn love and the advances of others, or the avenger of unrequited love.*

It’s also the name of an Arts foundation in Norwich. My first wedding of 2017, capturing Cathy and Steven’s small and intimate wedding at the Anteros, beside the river Wensum. In a building that once belonged to a wealthy Tudor merchant. On a very damp and dark Friday in January. Very different weather than that found in their current home in Mozambique!

But Norwich is key. It is where they met – Steven being a local, Cathy a girl who fell in love with the city, went to university there and so met her future husband. It was back from Africa for their wedding, with a small band of family and close friends. And that is my link – Steven was an usher at Josh and Helen’s wedding in 2014 (across the border in Suffolk). Now their roles were reversed, with Josh doing the usher duties and a reading during the ceremony.

Coverage kicks off a short walk away from the Anteros, at the smart B&B, 38 St Giles. After sneaking in the back way, Cathy climbed the stairs up to the Ande Gotto Music Room, for the wedding ceremony. A friend on piano and a local choir (including Steven’s mum in it’s ranks) providing the music. Then down to the courtyard for a bit of confetti. (Then quickly back into the warm).

No photos without a permit!

(Now at this point, Cathy had asked if we could go to take a few portrait shots at a local landmark, Pulls Ferry – a fifteenth century watergate. We squeezed into the vintage Rolls Royce and headed that way. Turns out it’s Cathedral land. Cue man in high viz jacket and official looking hat, blocking our way. No pictures – all ‘commercial photography’, as the cathedral sees any quick wedding portraits, needs to be booked ahead and a permit bought. Cathy hadn’t realized this. A call to the estate office – a firm ‘no!’, was the response. Plan B then – not that we had one.

Car turns around, but is then stopped again. Estate Manager was coming out! Were things looking up? Head pokes through the car window. Lots of “don’t like having this conversation on the day…this is private land…payment is required…off the top of my head, it’s £150…but that includes use of the cloisters…” (that was the gist). £150 for a few pictures by the watergate – that’s actually more than the Royal Parks charges in London. My suggestion to just let them have a quick snap, was met by his most fierce Paddington Bear glare in return! A look of outrage at such a suggestion. Remember outside is cold, dark and wet, as is all the stonework, the sky, the vista – hardly the best day for any such photography, let alone pay for it? And £150???

We left. Pictures by a car park instead, as Cathy shivered.)

Back to Anteros and drinks in the small galleries there, before the meal and wedding speeches. Then as the hall was setup for the ceilidh and local Norwich band, Stookey Blue, more local entertainment, as TWIA winner, magician Edd Crafer, worked the crowd, with a lively banter and fast hands.

Here are a few images from this wedding at the Anteros…
